CAPTAIN Kara Donnellan inspired West Coast to a thumping victory against Fremantle in the first women’s football derby at Domain Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After an even opening quarter, West Coast steadily asserted its authority in a bruising women’s exhibition match that proved an entertaining curtain-raiser to the Eagles-Dockers AFL clash.

AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said the interest in women’s football had grown ahead of next year’s national competition. “last year we added about 150 women’s teams … We are hoping to add around 230 this year”.

The Round 20 exhibition match between women teams from the Western Bulldogs and the Melbourne Demons was broadcast on free-to-air television, out-rating the previous day’s men’s match between Adelaide and Essendon.

Suburban footy feeling the impact of women’s AFL

The recent revolution in women’s football can be felt even at suburban grounds and clubs. Most of these clubs are now racing to introduce a women’s football team to their ranks or expand the ones they already have.
